Strat 1: Get two subjects and a couple books on each subject. Read through one (don't hurry, but don't force yourself to memorize every definition, solve exercises randomly, feel free to drop any if they don't come immediately), then swap to the other subject, and repeat. If you ever pick up any new subjects, read the Appendix even if you still remember.
Pros: forgetting and remembering builds long term memory, doesn't kill your motivation, knowledge of different ways of presenting a subject.
Cons: there are some absolutely essential insights that refuse to come from anything other than problem solving.
Strat 2: flip through the chapter, get to the exercises. Try to solve them, and search for theorems and techniques you can use to do so.
Pros: gets you to the general basis of problem solving in the subject, having a straight objective helps you absorb the examples and theorems in the text.
Cons: will tire you unless you like the subject, less long term memory, the book needs exercises to begin with.
