>i didnt actually realize the plasma injectors are timed to fire as the pistons strike the sphere, i thought the injector fired BEFORE the pistons, but i guess this way the plasma doesnt have to be in its little vortex torus for long

you bet.
best part is, this is actually a rather simple plasma production method, compared to tokamak, since it doesn't require the plasma to remain hot and stable for very long.
