>Wait. Would undersea colonists have a need for someone with a degree in aviation?

Yes, since the new hydrobatic subs handle like airplanes.

But there's more to it than that.

It was no accomplishment to climb out of the sea; we were driven from it by predators. At that time our greatest ambition was to survive long enough to reproduce, and from that point on up until perhaps a century ago, if one of us went below water it was by accident and almost always a death sentence. The year is 2012 and we have returned to the sea. We go not just to extract it's mineral treasures but to settle millions of years worth of unfinished business. This time it will not drive us out, for we've returned as masters.

The Deep Flight line is faster and suitable for deeper trips than prior submersibles as the air-filled area is much smaller than on a conventional sub and the ascent/descent is achieved by the wings/fins rather than ballast tanks.

A Deep Flight derivative will soon venture into the challenger deep, only the second time man will have gone there.

Hahaha, heyyy, hate on him because of Avatar if you like but he has a history of fantastic documentaries under his belt including my favorite, Aliens of the Deep.

He's doing his best to fill the gap left when Jacque Cousteau died and while he may not have the same poetic flair he's doing at least as much to advance sub-oceanic science.

A new generation of vessels "flies" rather than floats, rolling and looping through the sea like dolphins and sharks.

First, watch this video:

http://www.ted.com/talks/graham_hawkes_flies_through_the_ocean.html

Basically this guy is radically changing submarine design. From bulbous and slow to sleek and fast, using wings to dive or ascend, rolling and looping through the sea like an aircraft.

Is this a better way to explore the sea? To jet alongside pods of whales? To follow dolphin migration, to chase collossal squid into the depths?

And are there military uses? Seems to be these would be quite difficult to hit using conventional torpedos. Especially if they were modified to allow supercavitating propulsion.
