throwing aditional hours of work on a problem is not going to solve it on its own. Can you maintain clarity and focus working 10h per day? As C. Levintal said: if you make stupid experiments, one per year you'll solve the problem in 50 uears. But if you stop for a while and think there are only 5 ways a protein can be formed, and it will tske 6 months to rule out 4 wrong ones.

I'm not against long work hours, the nature of the work demands it, but there are hordes of useless PhDs working overtime, solution to their problems is certainly not longer work hours. What I am against is using "passion" to force people to slave away in grants under useless PIs and professors who have no idea about proper experiment design etc. Look at recent "leading academic turns out to be a fraud" those also exposed their data analysis and organisation methods; there used to be strong lab notebook culture in the past, best method to store and organize experimental findings, now leading academics use google docs and alike, no structure, no rigor. You dont want to waste away in purposles projects based on wrong ideas about philosophy of proper science.
