Modern war is so much different then ancient warfare it's surprising.There's not really any use for formations any more however battle field wide strategies work just as well today as they did 2000 years ago.

The phalanx is quite a popular ancient formation , even the Celts and Germans use it.

It's almost impenetrable from the front but has is vulnerable to flanking and is relativity immobile because of this there also more vulnerable to skirmishers since units in phalanx are way to slow to chase them.
