A way of looking at it is as the (algebraic) area between the x axis and the curve of f. To compute this area, you can imagine that you are slicing the x axis in "infinitely small" pieces of length dx and then summing the areas of the small rectangles of length dx and width f(x) (the error between this area and the actual area under the curve between x and x+dx being "infinitely small").
