I'm a newfag at math apparently and need your help

I've taken a few algebra classes in High School, but now I'm in college and it's been a while, so I'm rusty and don't remember how to do this stuff

I have :

x^4 + 5x^2 +9

My teacher's hint is that I should add 1x^2 to the 5x^2 and subtract 1x^2 at the end, which gives me

x^4 + 6x^2 + 9 - x^2

which would let me factor the first part just fine, but then I still have that -1x^2 at the end. What am I supposed to do with that? And is it even possible to factor the first three numbers while ignoring that x squared at the end?

Pic related, it's my face when this problem
