>modern physics is pretty mathematical (like general relativity), but do physicists ever really learn the math behind those theories?
Modern physics only gets worse the further down the rabbit hole you go, because it's constructed on flawed assumptions. I wouldn't recommend wasting valuable time and effort on it.

>Should I take (theoretical) CS classes insted?
Yes, take CS and earn a good living for yourself. Modern physics is a dead end.

>But what really interests me, what happens to matter that is accelerated to light speed; An impossible, Sisyphean task due to infinite energy requirements
There's no good evidence to support that.

>If no one enters the physics, because it's this frightening stale mate, how are we moving forward?
There's no possibility of moving forward without acknowledging previous mistakes.

>Completely off topic but can anyone recommend books on how proper science should done and another that explains the horror of modern academia?
The physics community has been adhering to the wrong emission model for light for over a century now, with no indication of changing.
