Scientifically speaking is it possible to become so used to disappointment that you are no longer affected by it?
I notice my partner and close friends/coworkers get absolutely crushed when something disappointing happens. What made me think of this was today something that I was planning fell through and people around me kept asking if I was ok and saying how they would have been so mad. I legitimately didn't give a fuck, I just adjusted my plans and looked for things to fill up the free space created by the lack of that project in my schedule.
Maybe it's because I grew up with a notoriously flaky mum so I'm used to things suddenly not happening at the last minute.

A simple idea underpins science: “trust, but verify”. Results should always be subject to challenge from experiment. That simple but powerful idea has generated a vast body of knowledge. Since its birth in the 17th century, modern science has changed the world beyond recognition, and overwhelmingly for the better.

But success can breed complacency. Modern scientists are doing too much trusting and not enough verifying—to the detriment of the whole of science, and of humanity.

Too many of the findings that fill the academic ether are the result of shoddy experiments or poor analysis (see article). A rule of thumb among biotechnology venture-capitalists is that half of published research cannot be replicated. Even that may be optimistic. Last year researchers at one biotech firm, Amgen, found they could reproduce just six of 53 “landmark” studies in cancer research. Earlier, a group at Bayer, a drug company, managed to repeat just a quarter of 67 similarly important papers. A leading computer scientist frets that three-quarters of papers in his subfield are bunk. In 2000-10 roughly 80,000 patients took part in clinical trials based on research that was later retracted because of mistakes or improprieties.

I suck at math.

I need to find the derivative of

f(x) = (x-2) e^(-x²)

I tried to calculate it and I found

f'(x) = -(2x² - 4x - 1) e^(-x²)

but I'm not sure if this is correct. Can one of you guys confirm/correct this please?

inb4 not using d/dx

When did you choose this rigorous and dull world that is science and math over other practices that are a lot simpler?

Heres a thought that occurred to me in the past few weeks:

I'm here because everything in the past was set up accordingly so that my mother and father would meet and have me at the precise time. If they were off by a millisecond, I wouldn't be here. Did it to early: not me either. Which just goes off to imagine in simplicity: WOW. Just imagine all the other individuals that could've been instead me. Simple scary, idea right.

Now, I know I've been selfish in this thread so far: but the same exact ordeal also applies to you . We're all here by chance.

And thanks to that chance that we are alive and given a conscious, we will also one day die. How horrible is that?

i can relate, op

unfortunately,
we live on a planet full of people waiting to die and get rewarded for their faith. not much motivation for progress in a life they believe is just a test of faith.

hi /sci/ I have this idea to logically prove the universe isn't infinite.
if the universe is infinite, a infinite number of planets exist. If there are an infinite number of planets, there is an infinite amount of planets like earth, thus, were life is possible.
Now, because there are infinite planets like this, every possibility is ought to happen somewhere on these planets.
So, if the universe is infinite, a planet like earth with intelligent life, far more intelligent than we are, exists.
Infact, there is an infinite number of such planets, given that the universe is infinite. There are infinite of these civilizations that have the possibility to make contact with us. However, we've never made any contact with intelligent alien life. Therefore, the universe isn't infinite.

What do you think? Pic related, fuck science, use good ol' logic to handle problems

OK /sci/ I am fucking sick of commuting to work and living in an area where rent is super high. I want to build a portal/transporter where I walk into it and come out the other end where I want to be, so I could live in another state if I wanted to. Any ideas? how could we possibly do this? help me out here, any ideas are welcome.
