They only recently managed to keep an embryo in one for few months so it could develop into a healthy lamb. About three decades before that the record was few weeks. So you have to wait a decade or so until they manage to do it in humans (or, maybe, they already can do it in humans, and it still takes some time to make that technology commercially affordable (but then people like Sergey Brin's wife are interested in this technology, so probably it will not wait for you and me, but it will eventually become available to you and me))

Couldn't artificial wombs solve this problem? If it becomes cheaper to produce new people, you can just mass produce tons of gene edited people and just euthanize/abandon the ones that turn out defective.

Realistically speaking though, the hard part is supplying the right nutrients and hormonal environment that you get in a normal pregnancy. Oxygenation and waste disposal are pretty decent with current techniques, but we need better methods of providing nutrition and also untangling the huge mess of different hormones needed at different times and figuring out which ones are even active in fetal development, what they all do, and how we can supply them all correctly for healthy development and that's going to take some time.
