I am currently in university, well on my way through 3rd year theoretical physics. No partying, just studying, so not many acquaintances other than (pretty much exclusively) people that I contact for very specific reasons. That would be ok but, well, I have been analysing the state of the research industry and it did occur to me that an extensive social network in the field could be extremely helpful in the future when I begin engaging in actual honest research. At the same time I do not want to take a lot of time away from my studies or take time off from my job just so I can "be social".

The main question I had in mind for this thread is: is the maintenance of a large network of social contacts absolutely necessary to any amount of success in modern science? Is it only partially related to success, or somewhat unimportant, or maybe absolutely imperative?

I want to consider all the pros and cons before I start investing time into something that can potentially bring no benefit at all, but only serve to waste my time - this likely being randomly inviting people from my course to coffee to discuss whatever, etc.

>The only thing we need to do is provide a very minimal voucher for the very poor, only for emergencies.
Or you could, y'know, provide healthcare for any citizen that wants it.

Take remedial classes at your local community college. They'll probably give you a placement test to see where you should start.

Geez, kids these days are so uneducated.

Obviously it's an albino woman still in her work uniform breastfeeding her baby who unfortunately suffers from Down syndrome.
