What is math?

What is the difference between say, Algebra and Calculus?

Is the syntax of mathematical notation consistent throughout different branches of math?

What exactly is a math problem?

How does one "solve" a math problem?

Biology question /sci/

Me and my friend were having a discussion and now I'm kind of worried because I never paid attention in biology and I think he might be right.

My dad has brown hair. So does his mom and dad. My mom has blonde hair. Her mom has brown hair and her dad has red hair.

Now my friend said since the red hair gene ended at my grandpa that it's impossible for him to have passed it on to me because it's recessive. I'm not sure how that all works with the XY square or whatever. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about so it makes me think I'm adopted or my mom fucked the milkman or something.

Also, if it is possible my parent's aren't filthy liars, how likely is it for a family with only a red headed grandpa to have red headed child?

I has a question about Organic Chem.

IR Spectroscopy to be specific. Does the value need to be exact? Say should the value be 1650 cm^-1for it to be an amide?

Im considering to apply for entering the Balseiro Institute to study physics. Here in argentina its the most prestigious institution of science. But im not really sure about its level and recognition in international circles.
Have you ever heard of it?
Can you tell me something about it? -anything you can tell me is good-
Is it well recognized?

This guy was a doctor. /sci/ is full of idiots that are incapable of looking at opinions other than their own.

I bet half of you wish for some shitty techno-communist government and watch zeitgeist. Retards.

Also, here's the question.
>Q: Academic freedom is threatened when questioning the theory of evolution. An Iowa State astronomer was denied tenure because of his work in intelligent design in May 2007. Censoring alternative theories--dogmatic indoctrination--has replaced scientific inquiry. Will you encourage a more open approach to the presentation of scientific facts that contradict the theory of evolution?
He answered yes.

You guys realize that while evolution is a theory backed by mountains of evidence, it is still a theory right? I'm not a creationist in any way, but you retards are going completely against how the system is supposed to work. If there are actual scientific facts that back creationism's argument, then why are you against it.

Actual Question, Not trolling. Kay, not saying I believe in god or anything like that, perhaps a higher unknown power, but not god as we know it, but here's my question.
Most of us on here say there can be no god, for science explains all or will. But what about the law of conservation of energy, what scientifically would explain all the energy that exists being in the universe?

I took some notes on centripetal acceleration during a lecture and am having a hard time making sense of part of them:

a rotating cylinder 10 miles long and 5 miles in diameter is to be placed in space. What tangential velocity must such a cylinder have so that the centripetal acceleration at the surface = gravity

I've got

a=g
a=v^2/r
v=sqrt(gr)
v=(9.8ms^2)*(2.5miles)*(1609m/mi)^2
>don't understand this part. wouldn't it be v=sqrt[(9.8)(2.25)]?
v=198m/s^2 is final answer

just a little help on that last step would be great
