Actually that's not half bad. Maybe instead of tokens you could use them like powerups in Mario Kart.

Say, three types of powerups - ones that affect the player, ones that affect individual racers and ones that are area of effect.

Ex. Use a -Friction powerup on yourself to accelerate faster on an incline

Ex. Apply a +Friction powerup on another racer to pass them at the last minute

Ex. Drop a -Friction mine near a hairpin turn to send racers behind you sliding off a cliff.
