Special relativity begins with two postulates that we take for granted.
1) inertial frames are all the same (intuitive)
2) the speed of light is the same in all inertial frames (suggested by Maxwell's equations)

It follows from the rules of velocity addition developed in SR that an object would require an infinite delta v and energy to reach the speed of light in any frame.
