If Linear Algebra is the study of linear equations, is College Algebra the study of colleges?

The logic astounds me.

So I'm 27 and I want to go back to university but I'm struggling to decide whether to go to engineering or pure science. Engineering seems more practical to me in terms of finding a job in your field after you graduate but I'm afraid that I'll run into the same thing with engineering that made me hate my college diploma: it might be easier to get a job and I might get more "practical" skills but it will be at the expense of learning in depth about things that interest me. On /sci/ I always hear people bashing engineers, saying engineers don't "need" to learn mathematics or how things really work, they just need to use tables, memorize equations by rote, and have software do calcs for them and having worked in architecture/construction, I know that this is in fact pretty accurate, at least when it comes to civil engineering.

Anyway, what I am mainly interested in studying, if I go back to school, is physics, but the practical choices for me are either mechanical engineering or architecture (I know, not exactly /sci/ but you do end up learning statics and load tracing but you don't need to learn boring shit about concrete and rebar like in civil). I really want to do research instead of slogging away at an office developing hemorrhoids for nothing. I need to know how realistic that is.

Can you post pics of your textbook page before the problem so we can make sure we're using the right formulae?

What do people do when a class is being taught incorrectly? As in, not even remotely attempting to follow the syllabus.
Today in class the professor dropped hints that he has no idea what the fuck he's doing (he said he spent a month before the semester learning the topic).
Instead of learning how compilers work, we're just simplifying summations on the board.
I've already set up a meeting with the department chair.

The worst thing is that I think nobody else in the class seems to actually care. They must be thinking that the class is a free requirement fulfilled and enjoying the ride.

Has anyone else on /sci/ ever had to deal with such systemic incompetence in their university?
