As an engineer, I really believe the entire math education system in secondary institutions needs to be defunded.

Everything after calc 2 quickly drops off in value. Differential equations, shapes and cryptography are useful, but there's definitely a lot of bad math.

>but I can be a professor
This is the same career path as gender studies.

>but I can...
Comp sci and engineering will always surpass you.

>but how can you prove 2+2=4
That's the thing. In the real world math is a good estimate but does not account for the real world. Sure there's perturbation theory, but that's also just an estimate.

The fact us the average person will never need math beyond algebra. Solving equations is archaic, and is dodged with spreadsheets and coding.

>Can't remember shit
Most the stuff you learn will be useless once you start working.
Most the stuff you shed tears, blood and sweat to learn will be forgotten in a short time because human memory is shit.

> "The vast majority of the human race, and the vast majority of the college-educated human race never need any mathematics beyond arithmetic to survive successfully,"
> many of today's math requirements are relics of the Cold War.
> In 1950, only 25 percent of students in the U.S. were taking algebra.
> math teachers are even against higher math for the masses.

If math were an elective, "American science and technology would be unharmed, and a lot of poisonous math hatred would go away instantly. Kids don't hate smelting, or farming, or knitting, or highway design, or portrait painting, or neurology, or juggling rubber balls, or sonnet-writing, because they don't have to take three years of instruction in any of these arts,"

I think we all agree that math is now officially deprecated. What else to use? Psychology?
