You do realize natural selection takes too long? Biotech is much more promising than any "natural" scheme. 200 years? I'll take immortality in a computer thanks.

Biochemical engineer here, are there any resources you know of that explain all of the regulations/ safety concerns I would need to know to start a biotechnology or genetics company? I wanted to start a biotech business but not sure how to handle all of the FDA stuff. Would a lawyer be the best bet, or are there any books on the subject?

I like how people cry Malthusian crisis every decade, yet it never happens. It's the equivalent of saying the Rapture's coming. just keep saying it every year, you'll be right one day!

And no, I wouldn't die for the human race. I'd rather go extinct then kill off the population because of a perceived problem. Not many things are worth destroying individual rights for, especially when there's no evidence.

How come both sides of transhumanism are surrounded by mysticism, conspiracy theorists, and in general New Age faggotry? Type in transhumanism or any variant of the word and you get a hundred posts that have more to do wit religion than science or engineering. I just want to talk about cybernetics and genetic engineering without the thread derailing into posts about how Mecha-Satan and the Illuminati are trying to steal our souls using computers or how technology will prove X hippie religion true and we can be apart of the universal energy and Namaste!

Note: This doesn't really apply to /sci/ since it's like 99% atheist, but discussion of transhumanism elsewhere will attract fundies, tin-foil hatters and New Agers faster than their collective disappointment when nothing happens in 2012.

Wouldn't you want at least some connection to reality though. Living in a computer would be like a dream world; sure you could create your own universe but we should at least finish science and explore the /real/ universe. At least for the sake of any alien species we might meet.
