Have you not paid attention this whole time? The goal of the project is to be the home port for a Solar System-cruising spaceship. Yeah, some of the missions that access the Gateway are destined for the Moon, but the ship they want to build there will be used to send people to explore Mars and various asteroids.

Anyway, even with the Deep Space Transport, it's still going to get blown the fuck out by SpaceX. The only good thing about the Gateway/DST is that it's a backup in case SpaceX fails for some reason.
