Last week /sfg/ actually ran the numbers on a NSWR-style fission torch version of the Shuttle SRB and it was terrifying. Something like 64G acceleration with a 100 ton payload for two minutes.

If it's ammonium perchlorate the dirt itself becomes our oxidizer for SRBs. Use SRBs for transportation everywhere to fill the atmosphere with nitrogen compounds. Grow sugars with aquaponic plants, and make rocket candy. The only external inputs you need are a magnetosphere and water.
