Can someone explain Schrodinger's Cat to me? I'm trying to understand the theory, but I just don't.

My current understanding is that, in particle physics, a particle exists in multiple locations, until it is observed. Then, when observed, it exists in a single spot because... magic? Bigfoot? The prophet Muhammed?

This seems like some kind of pantheistic universal consciousness bullshit. Does the particle 'know' when it is being observed? Does it 'choose' where to present itself? What the hell, you know?

Admittedly, I might be thinking about it al long, so can someone elaborate?
