Now that gateway is being set up by falcon heavy and the SLS green run has been delayed. Lets talk sbout the future of the artemis program.

It is possible, Falcon Heavy needs modifications, but that`s what engineers are there for.

SpaceX has already started construction of the extended cargo section to carry the modules of the Gateway station to the Moon.
It also started the construction of a bigger Dragon module, the Dragon XL, that will be used to transport astronauts to the Moon.
https://youtu.be/tytqEI9PjnY
SpaceX cannot stop winning. SpaceX will colonize the Moon.

Paper rockets should at least be entertaining. SLS is like a 35 year old who swears he's going to get a real job and move out any day now.

no, the Orange rocket is still there
SpaceX offered Falcon Super Heavy which was 5 boosters strapped together Soyuz style
Jim wanted to also throw in ULA's upper stage
didn't pass, presumably because it would make SLS completely unjustifiable

Frieny reminder, they picked the untested paper rocker x-33, which was several times more expensive, over this flight proven prototype

It makes SLS Block 1 look fucking worthless too. Reacting liquid hydrocarbon fuels with oxygen really seems to be some form of universal optimum for converting chemical energy into physical work.

NASA could literally do a moon mission with one of the Artemis Landers by launching Orion on a Falcon heavy, for a fraction the cost of SLS
The Artemis Landers are supposed to be launched up on superheavy/New Glenn/ Vulcan anyways

Would an expendable New Glenn be useful for anything? Expendable Falcon Heavy seems to play a part in a few concepts. (Commercial EM1, Europa Clipper)

New Glenn is so big that it feels like an expendable version could be practical for something.

>F9 upper stage kind of sucks
So, why not strap a hydrolox upper stage from let's say a Delta IV to a Falcon Heavy?

Artemis would be cool if it ever launched. I have my doubts that it will unless Jim Bridenstine just says "fuck it, do it all with Falcon Heavy."

I doubt that Orion would fly on a FH. The rocket doesn't seem structurally sound with the spacecraft and all of it's parts. I think it would require a specially built FH, SpaceX isn't the kind of company to make a specialty part unless paid to do so, and NASA (the old guard specifically) doesn't seem too interested to pay SpaceX for something that'll be a threat to SLS.

Then again, I have been proven wrong before.

Bridenstine has since walked back going commercial for EM-1, but the EM-1 deadline is definitely seen as the make-or-break point for the Administration on SLS.

By the way, this was the Frankenstack NASA figured might work to do EM-1 on a 100% commercial basis: a fully expended Falcon Heavy, launching an entire encapsulated and fueled Delta IV Heavy 2nd stage mated to Orion into LEO. It would require a lot of work, but the attraction was the dV was there, and all the parts already exist: NASA just needs to find out if they can actually work together to get to orbit.
