to a fool, the people arguing about the definition of 'life' ITT are doing something productive and this poster is acting like a fool
to a bigbrain, this poster is pointing out something interesting and definition arguments are founded on a philosophy of language which is inflexible and nasty

It's also the most powerful example of rigorous application of the null hypothesis found in the whole field of spirituality which was itself the primary field of study at his time
Quite simply, people posit selfhood all the time and provide no evidence
And until we are presented with evidence, there is no need to act at all
Hence meditation, the act of non-action

If consensus is that we are all going to suffer terrible losses within decades, why does /sci/ prefer arguing over small things than raising a fuss?

I’m really in a wholesome mood so I’ll go first

I think the fact that I, my conscious, was put on earth in 2000 instead of the countless undiscovered alien races that face unheard genocides, rapes, and war, is extremely lucky. Not to mention earth itself is an oasis in a world where solar system sized black holes exist

Scientists say there should be billions of earth like planets in the universe but why haven’t we found a single earth planet? In sci-fi earth like planets are in every star system.

So new years celebrations happen on 24 separate occasions throughout the globe. But i think humans just "decided" that the new year begins at midnight because its convenient to say that the new year should start with the new day. (2017 to 2018 happens the same exact time Dec 31 to Jan 1 happens). But the days are based on the earths rotation whereas the years are based on the earths orbit. Since the new years technically begins with the new orbit, this event should happen instantaneously right? So 24 separate celebrations should really all be happening at once. Anyone think theres a way to determine when this is?

Hey, /sci/ quick question about gravity. If gravity is real, shouldn't all spheres have gravity if the Earth does? Why can't I float marbles around a bowling ball?

What's going on with climate change? Worst case scenario we have some experts telling us is humanity will be extinct before the end of the century, best case we have people saying there's going to be famine and mass death on a scale never before seen in human history and a dramatic global decrease in standard of living even if literally the whole world stopped using fossil fuels immediately (which is preposterous because that in itself would also kill billons). Where's the silver lining in all of this? Maybe you will get to SURVIVE? And how is it most people go about their lives completely clueless and think that it's all going to get better and better? And what's more the people that do know about it, how do they get up in the morning? How do they be 'happy'?

Someone explain this simple shit to me that I just can't get. I just started Calculus and this is fucking with me.

A box is to be constructed from a sheet of cardboard that is 10 cm by 50 cm by cutting out squares of length x by x from each corner and bending up the sides.

What is the maximum volume this box could have?
