Due to advances in genetics the traditional notions of race are now understood to be complete bullshit. It's pretty much just a social construct and it's disingenuous to imply it's anything more because we now have better ways of studying human at the genetic level than race.

1) The research papers claiming interbreeding between homo-sapiens-neanderthalensis and homo-sapiens-sapiens claimed that the genetic markers they found related to neanderthals were found in all humans except some Africans. Not just "white Europeans".
2) Other published research papers show that it's also possible that said genetic markers could just be the result of an older common ancestor to both groups (with no interbreeding).

The book definition of "race" is that it is a social construct and it pretty much only applies to humans. Subspecies is completely different from race and it applies to everything (including humans but there haven't been any other human subspecies since prehistoric times).

Not actually, it's like saying you can find a set of genes that causes down syndrome. Does that then mean that down syndrome gene carriers are a race? It's actually worse though because the genetic markers that people try to use to classify people into races are typically shoved through a machine learning clustering algorithm which are inherently non-convergent (every time you train the algorithm you get a different set of clusters, it's not consistent unless you cheat like crazy, which people often do).
