I really don't see what the controversy is. If the message of that ted talk had been 'life is better for everyone' then

would be a fair criticism. The entire point was that taking all of humanity as a sample, the statistical likelihood of violent death is lower so it's misguided to switch on CNN and assume all of civilization is going down in flames. It's a basic heads-up about the risk of confirmation bias from watching the news, that's all.
