Was wondering has anyone got a PhD in Maths in here? as my friend was saying that it's not worth it and that academics is shit and most employers don't require it.

I'm going to graduate next year. I have several offers to get a PhD from good university Warwick. Would be studying Algebraic Geometry mostly.

The problem is the money is shit for grads. I would be getting paid about 20k for three years, then when I do go for a postdoc will be on about 26k for 6 years. Then I would have to have a tough battle for a academic position.

Plus, I'm not even that smart. Literally, I work 14 hours a day bloody thinking. It's so draining. I fear will never be like Einstein or Dirac or Perelman.

The thing is I applied for a grad scheme in banking. See it's £28k starting, then realistically when I finished which is like 2 years I will be on like £40k. If I work hard like I'm doing now but just focusing on banking I know I can make £60k+ a year by the time I'm 30. Which, would mean I can buy a nice house, nice motorbike. Go on holiday a lot, get shit ton of gold diggers who are 10/10 after me.

Surely, that better than torturing myself half to death to prove some theorem?

I just finished a PhD in Quantum algebra. Applying to a shit ton of jobs, all rejection. Applying to postdoc, like 1 in 20 going for the same postdoc.

/sci/ I really need your help with this. I need to find 2 sources of error on measuring the charge to mass ratio of an electron, similar to thompson's experiment. My teacher did not explain it very well and I have no idea what they could be. I don't think I can use measuring accuracy as one of them.

Scientists are usually poor workers. So assuming that I'd be getting my PhD soon, what do you think of spending some time at school again to get a MBA? I was thinking maybe I can earn my own cash making money of my scientific abilities.
