I don't know how to express this without sounding like a troll, but fuck it.

Let's say you take the earth and put it on a square piece of paper. Going from the left side to the right side makes you wrap around the paper and continue on. Why is it that when you reach the top, you don't magically clip to the bottom of the paper like you would expect? Is there a name for this?

Firstly no, this is not a joke or troll.
As some people noticed, NASA stated preparedness plan for any emergencies. Whatever they are, it is unknown. They surely have made them for a reason.
My one and only advice is REALLY prepare.
Those plans are well thought and in case of emergency it could improve survival probability.
So DO prepare, buy water, meds, food. Don't panic, even if nothing happens you lost nothing.
If you care about yourself and your family make sure you will be prepared. I pray and wish that this wouldn't be needed.

First time poster on /sci/ here

Doing a small paper for Astronomy about planet habitability, and I know that no known planet in our solar system is habitable. My question:

What makes Earth habitable? I know the water and atmosphere let's us live, but is there anything else I'm missing? What is the "criteria"?

So let's say a polar shift is not instantaneous, and is in fact a slow process that we would not notice as some people suggest. What changes, if any, would occur?

Soooooo I was really just wondering about like, why gravity works. Like how does earth know that sun is there so that can orbit. I'm sooooo confused.

What would happen if only one side/hemisphere of the earth faces the sun at all times?

What would NEED to happen for this scenario?

Hey, I remember reading a study or an article in the past which projected the mass of humans in the future taking into account the current exponential population growth. It was somewhere around the mass of humans equaling that of the Earth sometime, and then our galaxy. The time that it projected was shockingly close, within the proximity of 750 years i believe. Being the moron that I am, I didn't save the link, does anybody have information on this? A link or reference would be great. I'm trying to debate the rationality of China's 1 child policy and the possibility of selective breeding if anyone is wondering why I need this. Thank you!!!

Imagine the earth gets hit by something huge and it starts spinning like crazy and gets toward the sun in minutes.

Holy shit I want to experience that. day and night changing like crazy
is that possible though?

Because of the shape of the Earth, your head moves further than your feet.

The statistical probability of civilization is so ridiculously low:

1) Rocky planet in a certain size range, at the right distance from the sun with an iron core that creates a protective magnetic field.
2) Proper amount of water delivered from meteorites, no toxic materials, radiation or gases that might disrupt DNA bonds.
3) Nucleotides joining together randomly to create a self-replicating strand of RNA enclosed by a libid bi-layer membrane is enormous.
4) Mitochondria bacteria evolving and being absorbed by a Eukaryotic cell.
5) Social species evolving capable of language and civilization.

My guess is we could be the only species in 100 million Galaxies capable of Radio transmission.

Or maybe even the only civilization species in 1,000 Universes?

Regardless, I think it's impossible for another Alien space faring species to originate from our Galaxy or neighboring galaxies. The odds are just too huge.

Only chance we might meet Aliens is if they have propagated throughout the Universe already, or found a way to travel faster than light and has scanned the entire universe.

Earth's too crowded so we've dug down and carved out a cavern the size of England underground. The soil was dumped into the ocean to make a new tropical island. Both the cavern and the island are now new countries.

You're in charge of picking either the cavern or the island and establishing a system of government on it. Which do you pick and what kind of society do you develop for your new nation?

Now, scientists claim that Earth is spherical and rotating at a speed of between 700-1000 miles per hour, depending on your latitude. This is a very high rate change of acceleration. You can disprove this nonsense by simply jumping up as high as you can. Really, it's that simple. What happens when you jump? You come straight down to where you were. Ergo, if the Earth were indeed spinning at such a fast speed, wouldn't you land hundreds of feet away?

If you were to stand in the flat bed of a truck going 75 mph, and jump straight up, what would happen? You wouldn't fall straight down. You would fall out of the truck. That's because trucks move, the Earth doesn't. Thus, Earth is fixed in space and doesn't move.
