this conversation has been had a million times; everyone knows what sage is and how it is pronounced. colloquially, saging is entirely acceptable on 4chan and has been established by longstanding common use as a legitimate term in an of itself. moot himself has used it as well as other derivatives like "saged," so there is in fact precedent for its use in this way (see the rules page, archived Q&A threads with moot, and the FAQ page)

also, when people explicitly draw attention to the fact that they have saged a thread it is meant less as a downvote and more as a protest as to the content of the thread, or as a sign of disrespect unless it is noted as a polite sage (like you did), or a reason is given (which the person you responded to gave)

compare these three scenarios:

>making an off topic post and politely saging [>>6210054],
>replying to a thread that is not related to the board topic, but that you still want to contribute to, and politely saging (as in [>>6209555], [>>6210118])
>"you are a fucking idiot for thinking x, y, and z. sage this shit" (to underline or add emphasis to someone's dislike, or as an insult/disrespectful gesture)
>empty post with nothing but a sage (a sage in protest)
