Lead is not that toxic really. People can ingest large amounts of it for years and years before even noticing an effect.

For thousands of years people ate, cooked, and drank out of lead containers, and even put oxidized lead (oxidized lead salts are much more poisonous) in their food and wine as "artificial sweeteners".

Certain protestant religions try to justify their prohibition on alcohol by saying Jesus didn't drink alcoholic wine, but there is no such thing as non-alcoholic wine, which would be simply fruit juice.

Alcoholic drinks were known to be safer to drink in ancient times, even though they knew nothing about germs. They just knew drinking water often got them sick, while alcholic drinks were safe to drink (due to the high alcohol content killing pathogens.)

Must be an ABV of at least 4%+ to kill off pathogens. 10%+ stores and lasts longer in hot environments. 25%+ lasts indefinitely until the alcohol evaporates to lower levels.
