This is a long shot, but here we go anyways.
Are there any inorganic chemists in here?
I'm starting a project on some trivalent bismuth complexes and read a bit of the literature. First I hit the always appropriate review articles, then some relativistic effects papers by Pyykko and Pitzer. Lately I've been looking at the few synthetic papers with:
1.) a good yield
2.) a crystalline product that is well characterized
Are there any secrets, tricks, synthetic problems or skeletons in the closet about trivalent bismuth?

What component of strong AI is it that makes it into such a legendary and paradigm-shifting concept?

Superintelligence doesn't cut it for an answer. What is it that would enable superintelligence? If it understands all the laws of nature it's equal to wolfram alpha. Being social is nothing new, a chatbot can occupy people in pointless conversation, and why would it need to be able to speak fluent human language to be able to do good? Self-improvement? Well, what part of itself would it improve?
If it just identifies helpful tasks and proceed to optimize and do them, how is it then different from a narrow purpose-built AI?
If it can give a solution to all problems when asked, then it's just a problem solving search engine: google on steroids and does it really need pure intelligence for that as opposed to just some models it plugs everything into?
If it just have to create abstractions and fit things into them, having an abstract view of good, and doing things that can be abstractly defined as good, then why don't we have such a system already?

Could it be that the answer is so ridiculously simple that no one have thought of it, and all the AI researchers are out chasing red herrings?
