According to quantum theory particles and anti-particles come into existence in vacuums all the time, they then instantly disappear because they come into contact with each other. Near the event horizon of a black hole, the particles may appear on either side of the event horizon, preventing them from coming into contact with each other. Due to special relativity, particles leaving the black hole have more energy, due to 1st law of thermodynamics the black hole loses mass equal to the amount of energy of the particle.
