Humans are afraid of death, and want more than what they are given. These are the traits that allow us to grow and innovate, not some noble desire to explore the world around us.

The technology that will kick off the singularity will be developed and has been developed because it is profitable. People will pay to be uploaded onto computers because they're afraid of being left behind and want more power. Our "ascension to a higher state of being" is just as guaranteed as Apple releasing a new iPhone or Honda making a new car, and for the same reasons.
