I believe there are clusters or bundles of nerves, outside the brain, that are capable of their own thoughts, memories, and cognition. I believe they usually lay in a dormant or in a sleeping state for most of the time we're awake, and when they are awake the throughput to the main brain is very limited, so they can only pass along limited feeling or emotions, or they can sometimes communicate a more complicated idea over a very long period of time, in the order of days. This process may be so slow and tedious that it may not even register with us on on a conscious level.
