The soviets actually did a TON of research for Cryogenic propulsion for the N1 which gave the RD-56 (KBKhM) and the RD-57 (Lyulka), which were both pretty good engines for their times, and they were some of the earliest staged combustion cryogenic engines! RD-56 became KVD-1 and also was the basis for Indian CE7.5 enginee Sure none of them got to the level of experience and sheer performance as the good old RL-10, but they would have been fine for this use.
