Also a reason is that people can remember it for reading but not everyone can remember it well enough to write it, in my experience living in Japan.

As >>11040322 write, it means tea. In Japanese one normally calls it Ocha where the "O" adds a touch of formality.

I recommend Japanese green tea such as sencha, while macha is too bitter (and expensive).
