2 reasons:

Pfizer is a monolith in the pharma industry because they actively recruit former FDA officials and their board members are also on the boards of media companies. They're also dump a ton of marketing dollars into media.

2. mRNA tech is seen as the future of biotech, the platform is basically plug and play and they plan to use it to make a metric shitton of new treatments in record time. The industry wants them normalized and viewed as safe, look at the comments of the CEO of Bayer below.

Covid was the perfect opportunity for them to make the FDA accept the platform because people wanted a vaccine fast. The Pfizer CEO was literally told by his staff "we're using mRNA for the covid shots". Before covid they could never get any of their products past the FDA because, and wait for it...side effect profile.

Moderna is also a pet project for DARPA (US military industrial complex) and has been giving them grants to research mRNA for a decade.
