Dear pre/sci/ents,

I've been considering pursuing a PhD, but I know that earning one before getting extra-academic work experience is career suicide. Has anyone here done a PhD while working with unrelated things (part- or fulltime), or managed to land a commercial research position resulting in a degree? How did you go about it and what was it like?
