it mainly recieves harsh opposition because it goes against mainstream religious dogma.
if evolution is true, then creationism cannot be.
once you start to disprove certain bits of holy books (genesis, in the bible... i think the koran also has a creation story)
then it isn't much more of a stretch of the imagination to realise that other things written in the holy books may be wrong as well, and then where do you draw the line? all of religion starts coming into question, and religious people don't like that...
