>>The Higgs mechanism is essentially "particles get mass by going tbrough a higgs field" how is that useful?
>>Why did someone win a nobel for that?
>>Why?

Because modern scientists especially physicists, want to be scientists, not being scientists, these turbo-autists literally try to copy the ways great scientists discovered stuff instead of understanding how they got the idea for them.

Gravity actually comes from a field called the Flibsy field, it contains the zippy particles which interacts with each other trough series of equations that I made and which makes no sense mathematically, but I look like a retard, so gib noble for this great idea

What is time? To me it seems the eternalist view is the only reasonable way time could exist, and also the only way our existence can have any meaning. How could time be some sort of an invisible force of unknown nature that keeps bringing things into existence and then wipes them out at the next _time_ (note the recursivity of the definition)? What does it mean for a thing to exist at a certain time, if those earlier moments are mysteriously wiped away by some force and only the present exists? How can things both exist and not exist as a function of time when there's only one time?

It seems obvious that time has to be a literal fourth dimension. Things exist in a certain point of space, and that space exists in a certain point of time. So, things either exist or don't (instead of being spawned and removed by time), and both time and space are only extra specifications about the existence of things (a thing exists, but you can also be required to tell where and when). This would mean that we exist in multiple points of time but are only able to perceive things from the perspective of the current time frame we're located in. Which is pretty great, everything that happens to us "always" exists, there's no concept of that asshole "time" who can wipe it away retroactively. If every moment we live was doomed to be wiped away somehow, none of them would ever matter, but instead all of our moments exist.

Hey /sci/ Mechanical engineering major here, so I have one more math class I have to take for my major. I get to choose from a list of classes but I don't know which one would be more beneficial to what I'm studying and I wanted to get someone's opinion. The classes I can choose from are intro to numerical analysis, statistics and probability for sciences, partial differential equations, complex variables, or advanced calculus.

If it's official, pin the thread.

Are text-only boards still around? Can those be used as containment for racial science discussions? Those threads do seem to abuse a lot of infographics that they cherrypick before presenting, so it might actually be better for discussion if they actually had to cite their information instead of leaning on bullshit graphs. That goes for every side of the debate, honestly.

That is largely how it works. He just doesn't grasp the cost of using those operations and why they can't be employed by your average physicist at a scale necessary for answering most of our substantive questions about fluids.

It's not a question oft heard on /sci/. The problem isn't that we can't do it. The problem is that our current methods require finance, time, and the availability of some powerful capital. Despite Hollywood-esque desensitization to the true rarity of the highest-end computing systems, supercomputers are terribly expensive and specialized investments that no one has just laying around, and no sane researcher is gonna use his limited research budget to pay for something that's only planned to be used to resolve a few of his conjectures and then for nothing else.

If we had all the time and money in the world, it wouldn't be a problem, but real life can be a real bitch.

In order to be a good physicist you must not give a shiet about rigorous math. That's the beauty of the field.

Having a high IQ makes social situations fucking annoying.
You have to constant dumb yourself down to be able to have actual conversations with normies.
I know this shit sounds dunning-kruger and I myself never really thought of myself as intelligent. But I recently did an actual RL IQ-test with my psychologist and scored 147 on it.

I always thought of myself as just being dunning-kruger, and not noticing where my own intellectual errors are at.
But now I guess I have to accept that it's not me, but instead the vast majority of humanity.

I'm only 18 but studied philosophy and physics on PhD level.

Got an elo of 2450 in chess, while still going up.

Oh man I'd say in another 10 years I'll reach my absolute peek.

The only people I could ever have serious discussions with were actual professors of the subjects I'm interested in.
People often considered me as being borderline retarded in HS because I this fucking introverted and autistic, that they got really shocked then I spoke up and said things the teacher couldnt even comprehend at some times.

Meh, I'm working on various physical theories and philosophical works right now.
I'm even thinking about just dropping it all and writing some Elliot Rodger tier fuckyouall-book.

Sorry for the autistic rant.
thanks for reading

Self studier here. I was trying to understand the epsilon-delta definition of the limit and tried to test my understanding by trying to prove that the limit of x^2+1 when x->5 is 26.

Proof:
Let e>0
Suppose abs(x^2+1-26)<e
=abs(x^2-25)<e
=abs((x+5)(x-5))<e
=abs(x+5)*abs(x-5)<e

Then if abs(x-5)<d
=abs(x-5)*abs(x+5)<d*abs(x+5)
=> d*abs(x+5)>e
=d>e/abs(x+5)

QED

Is this right?

Ok so i was sitting in my advanced physics class and came up with this awesome joke.

Why did the student study at the top of a mountain?

Because that's where he had more potential.

I told it to my teacher and she said it was funny. What does /sci/ think? Also general jokes thread

What the fuck did you just fucking say about complex numbers, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I stopped caring about math when I was introduced to the concept of imaginary numbers, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Gebra, and I have over 300 crocks of shit. I am trained in equations that can only be solved by inventing numbers that can't exist and I’m the top math deity in the entire US academic forces. You are nothing to me but fucking wrong. I will wipe you the fuck out with math the flaws of which have never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of algebra solutions across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better say "the correct answer is whatever the correct answer is", maggot. The math that says the pathetic little thing transcribed to words. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can mark you wrong in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just if you write it down in english instead of ancient math runes. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Logical Math Corps and I will use numbers that never lie to their full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy flaws your little “clever” human construct was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit complex numbers all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

this
I thought it was possible to have a reality in a computer substrate until I read some penrose. either way it's unfalsifiable. It helps to read about the distinction between sybolic computation and semantics. Also helps to understand intentionality (the philosophical term) and how it relies on physical causation to function, not merely a representation of the causation. We could create a perfect simulation of reality in a symbolic computer, hypothetically, with no loss of classical information, but the agents inside it would not have consciousness.
