Ration Density:

I'm doing a proof regarding rational density.

Let <span class="math"> x \in \mathbb{R} \forall \epsilon > 0
Can a define a <span class="math"> q \in \mathbb{Q}
as follows?
<span class="math"> q=x + {\epsilon}/2
my friend claims that this is an equivalent statement to that of rational density in R. i think that since epsilon and x aren't necessarily rationals, then it won't define a rational.

Not asking for help on my proof, this is more of a conceptual question.

How do you stay focused on one topic in math at a time?

I find myself jumping from book to book trying to absorb as much as I can. I'm currently going into my 4th undergraduate year, and I feel like there's so much math I still don't know for graduate school. I've gotten the basics down like real analysis and group/field theory, but there's so much more that I want to know like algebraic number theory, or functional analysis, or partial differential equations, and so on.

How do you stay focused on one topic without trying something else after a few chapters? Or do you have any helpful advice in this regard?

Hey /sci/, what are you guys majoring in the university you attend or, if you've graduated already, what are you doing now? I wanted to ask since I'm sort of undecided myself and I'd just like to see what all of you are doing. I'm partial to Biology myself but I'm pretty decent at math and I'd feel like it'd be a waste of talent if I just ignore it.

I apologize for a greentext story but it allows me to be concise:

>naturally good at math (read: good memory and intuition) but didn't like it
>hated math class, hated homework, never did it
>70s or 80s, but good tests
>do extremely well on standardized tests and AMC
>teachers think I'm lazy and use me as an example to later classes
>kicked out of math team and AP Calculus
>miss a shitton of school because depression
>take 2 extra years to graduate
>engineer offers to tutor me in math so I can finally graduate
>2-3 months of pure bliss
>suddenly, everything makes sense
>math is awesome, math is beautiful
>going to pursue an engineering degree and hopefully tutor some other people that fell through the cracks much like myself

Why do they teach algebra, analysis etc. in school?

It's something you'll only use in a limited number of jobs. Most will never use it again after school and just forget everything, therefore it's a huge waste of time.

i am a double major in a program called philosophy, politics, and law, and also philosophy. i have pretty much all of my required classes met but am looking to study math and science on my own time since i feel like i am lacking in these subjects.

what would be a good order to study these subjects in? with math i am up to calc and havent taken anything related to sciences other than chemistry since 10th grade.

Maybe you guys can provide a scientific answer to my question:
(I've already asked this on another board but nobody knew exactly)

What will result in a better final fap/orgasm:

-Edging every day for a week without cumming and then cum
or
-not touching my dick at all for a week and then cum?

Fact: If a job can be done by a machine it's trivial
Fact: A computer is a machine
Fact: A computer can do math

Ergo: Math is trivial. So why do we need mathematicians?

Well the value is clearly variable. But not random. So the closest you can get to a value is an equation, so why didn't you do that on the test?

I need serious help /sci/. Although I know most of you will doubt my story, this is for those who will believe me.

I truly wish to help a fellow classmate understand math. No this isn't a "my 'friend' doesn't understand anything can you help 'him'?" thread. I always found it easy to understand mathematical concepts, which makes it rather difficult to put myself in the perspective of those who do not understand them.

We have a major exam in a few days. It's pretty basic Calc 1 stuff, but he just can't get it. I know that public education tends to screw students over with math, especially since half of the teachers can't even explain the concepts behind what they're teaching, but is there any way to save him? Do you have any analogies for helping to explain differentiation/integration? I can understand it fine, I just don't know how to translate the ideas into words, and make him understand it.
