Define thick? Most of my ships have never had more than a couple mm total of rigid armor, I would usually go with an ballistic fabric of some kind on the inside, one or two rigid shock plates of boron fiber or one of the stronger metals, padding made of aerogels inbetween layers and an external shell of polyethylene plastic, which due to simulation memes is one of the best anti-laser coatings. Doesn't do much against player lasers, but then again neither will ten meters of solid steel, it's more than enough to protect my ships from most anything the AI can throw at them.
Here's some modded in fusion weapons, normal nukes are a bit of a crapshoot since the dev can't exactly model them realistically, they tend to be far weaker than they could be in real life.

Here's some stock AI ships getting melted down into hollow aluminum shells by a cluster of small fusion torpedoes exploding in the midst of their formation.
