So when you scientific people say 'consciousness,' do you mean sentience or sapience? Because I thin those might be a bit easier to work with than the blanket term 'conscious.' That shit can mean anything from alive to voluntary action to just being awake. That sounds like a word scientists wouldn't be too happy to use because it's vague. And I'm pretty sure scientists prefer accurate versus vague.

You don't appear to be smart enough to understand shit. Being able to manipulate numbers and expressions is quite valuable in math. By resorting to a generalized formula /every/ time, you're basically telling us that you either cannot see the obvious patterns (such as with the OP's question) or you have a very lazy approach when it comes to math. Similar to the scientists and engineers who only want formula to plug numbers into without realizing what the formulas are actually doing.

When you looked at kinematics (if you have), you probably just took the base equations for position, velocity given time, and velocity given position without realizing how it was derived much less fiddled around with the concept of variable acceleration.

When you got to (if you have) multiplication with vectors in calculus, you probably just memorized what to do without realizing what dot and cross product actually do to the vector and their implications in physical space.

I could continue but the point is that, if you rely on this equation every time, you probably aren't a very good mathematician or physicist.

Now find the zeroes of <span class="math">\displaystyle x^2-2x+1[/spoiler] using your drawn out equation.

Also, the determinant is very relevant to this discussion and I believe you are mad about the fact that I plucked out one of the more valid (and obvious) rebuttals for your rickety argument before you realized it. If we're discussing the positive and negative aspects of one approach over another, it might be intelligent to look at the big picture.

Anybody have any info on this torrent? Its a 75GB mutha with countless textbooks on pretty much every topic from chemistry to calculus and other shit like history. Seems legit, I'm currently at 5% and its seeded, speed is mediocre. I've been downloading for two days but looks like I got a long while still. Kinda wonder who compiled the thing, though. If I can finish it and it seems good might add it to the /sci/ guide; anybody else seen this before?

The problem people have with psychology is that it psych used to be exactly what people accuse it of.

Until the 1980's, psychology was dominated by cultural determinists who bought into anti-scientific ideologies and made prescriptive declarations of how society 'should' be, and how people 'ought to' behave. But the invention of Cognitive Science in the late 60's led to psychologists working side-by-side with neuroscientists and anthropologists for the first time, and the deficiencies in psychology as a science were made painfully obvious. From this, a whole new generation of psych graduates who got their phd's assisting in cogsci projects who naturally brought their interdisciplinary insights to bare their own field. This led to a renaissance in psych throughout the 80's, culminating in the new discipline of Evolutionary Psych in the early 90's ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adapted_Mind ). No-one familiar with modern psych could doubt that it is a science (now).

So while I understand why people generally have such a poor view of psych, I assert that it is an outdated one. But I guess this is the kind of thing that takes time to filter thru to the general memepool, and as more and more evo psych research is done, and more and more of it is popularized, I expect it will fix itself soon enough.
