That was just a hypothesis and it was proved by many experiments later.
There were other hypotheses, like that matter is built out of platonic solids, but these were disproved.
Making hypotheses is fine, but assuming it is true and believing it is no matter what is not, because it's just like assuming earth is made of little cubes.
Hypothesis is just a possible explanation, theory is a hypothesis proven by experiments.
You can't call something scientific, if you don't examine and prove it. Science is based on empiricism.
