It was the same thing with us. It was a very small chance, just like how female ligers are viable, while males aren't. I think the current theory is that male Neanderthals mate with female sapiens (take from that what you will) and the offspring of those would've been viable, but not the other way around.

Considering that European women sided with the Nazi soldiers by marrying them, I 'd think it would be. They're not loyal to a group. They'll side with the stronger male.
