As the name says, I do love science. It is a bit like magic that you can understand and use. There has been a lot of buzzing in my life recently with people not appreciating math and science. Like most people I have grown out of the phase where I assumed that things that seem obvious to me are also obvious to others. I moved from the west to the heartland of the bible belt my senior year in highschool. It was a culture shock to say the least and it opened my eyes to different ways that people rationalize. There was an article in the news regarding a possible satellite being sent into orbit that could be used to shine light down on the earth when a natural disaster happened. It seemed like an interesting idea, technology for the benefit of mankind rather than war. No brainer, right? Wrong. So the teacher asks those of us that agree with it to go to one side of the room and those in opposition to go to the other. I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say that this cab was rare, but I thought "nah, forget it, yo holmes to Bel-Air!"

So the 2nd atom aks: "Quantum well - what are ya gunnadoo abootit?

and the 1st atom, after having a few, replies:

"In principle, I am uncertain about getting charged,
maybe its gone off on the great cosmic wave train,
or eloped with a stray alpha particle.
Maybe I'm just losing my attraction?
Maybe I've taken one too many hits from the lab.
Maybe I should just decay right here in this bar."

At that moment, a delightful little e- flies through the
aether of the inter-atomic realms and settles in a mutually
comfortable 1920's eigenstatechair near the virtuous pair,
and says to the two atoms:

"Hope you guys are not molecular"

So the 1st atom perks up and says:

"Naa: just been surfin' and think I lost an electron"

The 2nd atom finishes his drink and leaves, saying:

"Gunna split. Gotta DNA contract this evenin'"

And as the sun sets slowly in the west, and the crescent moon
rises only just a little faster over the eastern ridges of
the atomic horizon, the atom and the electron take a stroll
under the emergent stars, and know with a growing certaintly
that they are not just some loose charges looking for a little
physical action, but in fact the beginning of a newly created
completeness in the midst of the cosmic harmony - if only for
a picosecond.

Albert puts down his stopwatch and smiles, despite the
reception of his theory.

>mfw contemplating this

Energy from nothing, impossible by the known laws of physics, yeah? But isn't the magnetic field it's own form of energy? Maybe not in the sense we're used to, but if there's harnessable energy there, there could be something to it.
Clearly we need to build some and test them for functionality and longevity.

Do constants(e.g. speed of light in a vacuum) have definite measurable values, or is just the case that the closer you measure it to, the more you have to measure it?

Hey /sci/

I need your helping. I working on a budget right now, and I'm having a total brain fart. I'm trying to figure out fuel costs per month. I took the miles I drive to work (300 per week) added 20%, then divided by the MPG I get (26mpg) and divided by 3 for fuel costs. Ended up with $39, which is of course no where near correct. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Please help?

Does anyone else think time dilation is simply wrong?

One main proof is that light bouncing back and forth at the speed of light between two moving objects appears to zig-zag to a stationary viewer. Because the zig-zag path the viewer sees is longer than the distance between the objects, and because the speed of light is constant and can't move a longer distance in the same amount of time, it appears to takes longer to move back and forth between the objects and therefore the passage of time of the clock on the object is slower than the viewers clock.

Bullshit.

How did people like Carl Sagan raise this up as scientific fact?

It's obvious that the light moving between the platforms could never be the speed of light because it also has to be moving forward along with the objects. Therefore it is zig-zagging and at a constant speed. This also makes it possible for the viewer seeing the objects fly by also sees the zig-zag and sees it bounce between the objects at the same frequency as the person on the objects.

Besides, how would the clock on the objects slow down? How would biological functions slow down? They just magically do because an object is moving really fast? Time isn't even a tangible part of nature, it's just chemical reactions and observations.
