I hear you completely, OP. I've seen all of what you're describing from the inside out. Here's what I've discovered...

>program modern games
If you are passionate about modern games, then you have to be realistic. Modern games are developed with toolkits. I've been a part of projects that have failed because of the "do it our way" mindset instead of using existing tech/solutions. If you want to make games, you'll need to learn toolkits.
You will need to either learn programming, graphic design, sound engineering or develop a good social network (and leadership skills) to mobilise a team that can do this. You can't do it all, so don't bother trying.

>programs and maybe even interact with hardware on an assembly level
If you are serious about programming, then there are two sides you can start from. You can start at the hardware level and work toward programming micro-controllers, or you can start at the pure software level. This will affect which path you take in your studies. Software/Programming is a BIG domain. People generally either choose an area to specialise in (databases, networking, hardware drivers, etc), or they learn just a little bit about all of them (just enough to know the right question to ask).

Either way, it will take perseverance. You have to be prepared to endure many frustrations that may take you years to fully understand. If you are more passionate about the result, and need things to move faster, your time might be better spent going to meetups to form a team.

I already did. Your reactions are a proof of your insecurity and urge to show those who laughed at your disorder in your past...SHOW 'EM! SHOW 'EM ALL!

Ah, this was a triumph, thank you.
