The perception of beauty is the result of a number of interactions between your visual system, hippocampus and midbrain. Though it can be overridden, like anything else, your brain has adapted to seek out signs of good health, and facial characteristics that have been considered the definition of beauty follow the golden ratio in their dimensions. The rest is determined by culture, in which you are saturated from birth until death. Consider also the context of a situation; only artists and some scientists seek beauty for it's own sake.
