In your experiences (and your opinion in general) is it better that you have a professor that assigns textbook problems as homework for credit, or one that does not grade such assignments? In math and science courses.

As first, I thought that it would be better to have them assigned, because if they aren't graded, I'm more likely to not to them, and not know the materal as well for the tests. However, I am an epic procrastinator like a lot of you (don't deny it), and the thought of actually having to do work makes me uneasy, so I tend to put it off (along with) reviweing the chapter and researching things I need to understand better.

So because of the anxiety caused by having assigned homework, I put off studying alltogether; whereas if nothing is due, I study more often, and get to know the material better.
Complete some of the assigned excersizes if I feel like I need it.

In general, I thing its better left optional, let people be responsible for their own studying, and it will be obvious who didn't do any problems when they fail the test.

why is mathematica such shit?

it's too slow. matlab manages pattern-matching in nanoseconds. mathematica hangs for nearly a minute on babby's first integral.
