Mass market scifi stories have to follow conservation of human attention. If you want the audience to focus on the implications of shiny new propulsion or just reenact the Battle of Midway in space, you can't have Altered Carbon style consciousness backups changing the meaning of what it is to live or die at all. The audience would get lost. Settings like Eclipse Phase that try to do everything at once get stuck in the nerd ghetto.
