When India lost its lander you could tell it failed before it even reached the ground. I think that's the worst kind of failure because landing ain't easy, but it shouldn't be so hard to reach landing level even if the ground turns out to be covered with boulders.
Some of it is because you have to throost all the way, there's no EZmode parachute to let you coast to a landing.

Probably because for 50 years, hardly anything was done with the moon, other than bouncing lasers off of a little mirror. Even when people did try to land stuff, it often just crashed.
