Conservation of energy. There's no way there's enough energy in mass M of petrol to lift even mass M in a gravitational field where conservation of energy applies, let alone M plus you and the structure of the Machine.

Flight is always fifty years away, it will never happen.

Rest assured that while Klomp may have accrued a recent following, there is no reality to his fantastic claims. What is concerning is the increasing number of young apes spending less time clubbing animals and more time ‘inventing,’ ‘thinking’ and ‘creating,’ none of which contribute to the preservation of the simian way of life. These sorts of fads come and go, however, and this author is confident that in a short while everyone will have forgotten about Klomp and the notion of being anything more than an ape.”

Most transhumanism threads degenerate into a genetically-engineered immortal super-furry grasping the external power-spar of an alcubierre ship, feeling the solar wind of VY Canis Majoris on her unshielded skin (because she's immortal, not just ageless) beholding the epic metropolis among the dyson swarm.

I love the concept of transhumanism. I dislike being covered in nerdwank bukkake.

Perhaps we can discuss how human sexual selection is now inadequate in the modern world?

Natural selection favors traits that detract from a civil, organized, and intelligent human society.

Brain in a jar isn't exactly easy to do, but the barriers you need to leap do not appear at present to be insurmountable.

The brain, without the limitations of the body, should be able to live for a very long time. Multiple centuries, long enough for computer engineers to realize that gay sex gets old after a while, and decide to build us a technological singularity.

Then promptly get back to gay robot sex.

Remember to take "machinery and modification" in the broad sense - biological modifications, not just mechanical, fall under the umbrella of "transhumanism."

Some people say that our ever increasing dependence on technology is a bad thing. I can't remember a very large percentage of specific, memorization-things without a computer, but can explain concepts.
>Professor comes up to me in gen. eng lab and talks about the structurall difference between mannose and glucose, and then asks me to fill in the blank. I say they differ between one chiral center, and he says "Yes, but what ARE they?" Isomers? "Yes, but what kind of isomers?" Beyond the fact that they're isomers, and they differ at one chiral center, that's all I really know about their structural relationship. He fetches his 9-iron (he golfs) and mock-threatens me with it...then an entry level freshman med student walks in for his 10AM appointment to find his academic adviser brandishing a 9-iron like a baseball bat and advancing upon a student. Luls were had.
>cool story bro
Two seconds later I open laptop, Wikipedia "Differ at one chiral center" and find the word "epimer." I cannot remember epimer, and you know what, I'm fucking OK with that. I can access a Wikipedia page and digest the useful knowledge almost as fast as I can recall an obscure memory and present knowledge on that memory....and the Wikipedia page gives broader scope and allows me to recall more details to boot.

But you know what? I'm OK with that, because it's just an omen of things to come, when one day in this generation we may open our minds to computers and comprehend the virtual as easily as the physical. I am merely ahead of the game when I am unreliant upon my flawed biology, embracing that which makes me stronger.

What is the /sci/entist's view on our dependence on technology, which some would view as pathological?

Nondestructive, nontoxic, long-term, highly specific measurement of action potential activity on a neuron by neuron basis.
Transhumanism starts with humans, and if this goes as I plan, it's a potential big step forward. So, you bet your ass I am.
